On every single day average of 10 persons commits suicide in India due to drug abuse and one of them is from Punjab. The young generations, particularly teenagers, are the worst victims of evils of Drug Addiction. These addicted people are on the way to the steady and sure death. It is a social evil that affects the individual as well as the nation as a whole.
Various types of drugs come to the market through the smugglers and peddlers. Atfirst the students and youth take it out of curiosity or to fly to the dream-land of intoxication. When coming to Punjab It is estimated that four out of ten men’s are addicted to some or other drug and that up to 50% of those are young farmers. Children as young as 12 years of age are seen to be involved in the drug trade.
Drugs are openly sold and easily available. The reasons for widespread drug addiction in Punjab are unemployment and frustrated economic expectations. In recent years there has also been a sharp increase in the rate of HIV infections in the state. This is because the rate of injectable drug users is far higher here than in other states.
The national prevalence of HIV is 9% but inPunjab this number is in the region of 26%. Most addicts earn between Rs 6,000-20,000 a month but need an average of Rs 1,400 a day for drugs. So where does the surplus money for daily drug use come from? Most addicts become small-time peddlers. They buy and supply and retain a small cut, and that is how the drug economy expands.
